The Field of Bone

The Field of Bone is the dry, scorched ground northeast of Cabilis where young Iksar take their first steps outside the walls, among skeletons, scorpions and the bones of a dragon killed in the sky above it.

A dead reservoir

The field was once a vast reservoir for Cabilis and the buildings around it, a classic zone atlas says. Long ago great battles were fought here, and the magic unleashed scorched the earth for good; since then only the banished and the dead have roamed it. A player guide adds that the field is bone dry while plant life and wetlands ring it: the Swamp of No Hope to the south, thick forest to the east and west, and a cliff on the north end that drops to the coast of the Timorous Deep.

The battle in the sky

Long before the elves found Kunark, the Iksar fought a great war against the Ring of Scale. Its final battle took place in the sky above this field: Emperor Ganak of the Iksar and Jaled’Dar, leader of the Ring of Scale, fought until both were destroyed, and Jaled’Dar’s bones still lie in the field. A community wiki adds that both spirits remain in Norrath, Ganak in Trakanon’s Teeth and Jaled’Dar’s shade in the Dragon Necropolis, each helping those who would enter new dungeons and each wanting revenge. The full story is in Jaled’Dar and the Field of Bone.

Hunting the field

Most of the field is desert-like ground roamed by insects, scorpions, scaled wolves, outcast Iksar and the risen dead. A classic zone atlas notes that only the Iksar and the undead attack on sight, but it warns new broodlings that stronger skeletons, bandits and manslayers wander through their hunting grounds; not every Iksar out there is a Crusader come to help. Scaled wolves hunt in packs, and the insects come to each other’s aid, which makes them more dangerous than they look.

Notable creatures named by a player guide include the Carrion Queen and the Scourgetail Scorpion, and the outcast leaders Kerosh Blackhand and Gharg Oberbord.

Roads onward

The field touches six zones, a classic zone atlas says: East Cabilis, Warsliks Woods, the Swamp of No Hope, the Emerald Jungle, and the dungeons of Kurn’s Tower and Kaesora. Kaesora lies beneath the field; a player guide says it was built in the reign of Rile Sathir and used as a citadel by the vampire lord Chosooth. Kurn’s Tower, named for the warlord Kurn Machta, was where Rile’s son Atrebe Sathir bred the Sarnak, and ghosts still haunt it.
