Cabilis

Cabilis, often called New Sebilis, is the walled city of the Iksar near the centre of Kunark: the new heart of an empire that is rebuilding itself and pushing back out into the lands it once ruled.

New Sebilis

player guides tell the same short history. The Iksar took the city back from the Sarnak long ago and made it their new home, and there is a constant effort to tame the land around it so that the city is safe. For centuries, a player guide says, the Iksar looked inward, rebuilding their culture and society so that they could face the outside world again; that time has now come.

A community wiki calls Cabilis the last of the Iksar cities, rivalled in size only by the lost capital of Sebilis. The Iksar keep building it to reflect their lost glory, but the land is boggy, so some quarters need more work than others: the ground is treacherous and foundations give way.

East and West

The city is split into two zones. East Cabilis is the cultural centre: it holds every guild hall except the necromancers’, it is where the Iksar military leaders live, and it is where the Haggle Baron runs every merchant in the city. A player guide lists its guilds as the Court of Pain for monks, Fortress Talishan for warriors and the Temple of Terror for beastlords, shamans and shadow knights, beside a bank called The Block. A classic zone atlas lists the Temple of Terror as the city’s religious house, and notes that every artisan facility is available.

West Cabilis is a different world. It is dominated by the Tower of Death, the necromancers’ guild hall, which a player guide notes also serves as a PvP arena.

Gates to four lands

A classic zone atlas sets out four ways in. East Cabilis holds the gates to the Field of Bone to the northeast and the Swamp of No Hope to the southeast. West Cabilis, under the eye of the Tower of Death, opens onto Warsliks Woods to the northwest and the Lake of Ill Omen to the southwest.

Each of the four is a different problem for the city. The Iksar send many of their broodlings into the Field of Bone to tame it. They let the swamp run wild apart from a small outpost by the walls. In Warsliks Woods they have met hard resistance from goblins and forest giants, and many outcasts live there. The lake matters most: the Sarnak have a fortress there and are slowly spreading, clashing with Cabilis and with the local goblins.

Rumours from the south

South of the city lies Firiona Vie, the forest that held the elves’ outpost. A classic zone atlas says rumours are reaching Cabilis that the elves have come back, bringing with them other soft-skinned peoples the Iksar had never seen.
