Swamp of No Hope

The Swamp of No Hope is the great marsh southeast of Cabilis: froglok country, taken back from the fallen Iksar empire and held to this day around a large froglok town near the spring that feeds it.

The frogloks’ swamp

A classic zone atlas says the swamp stretches from the southeast corner of Cabilis far to the east. After the Iksar empire fell, the frogloks, the Iksar’s old enemies, took back the swamp and made it their home, building a large town deep in it near its spring. They still hold it despite frequent fights with the Iksar, who sometimes take them as slaves. A player guide calls the swamp a hub for the frogloks of Kunark and says the Iksar have let them keep their outpost in their own part of it. For the frogloks of the older continents, see Guk and the frogloks.

Water from the mountains

The swamp is fed by water from Trakanon’s Teeth, a player guide says, and that reservoir is infested with aggressive, bloodthirsty ravengers, so crossing it alone is unwise. Wandering undead and the local plant life are the other hazards. A classic zone atlas lists man-eating shrubs, ferns, creepers and vines, along with leeches, lampreys and mosquitoes, among the swamp’s creatures.

Travelling and fighting

Crossing the swamp is not very dangerous if you keep your eyes open, a classic zone atlas says. Only banished Iksar, skeletons and frogloks attack on sight; the first two stand out against the green, and frogloks can be heard from far away. The trouble comes when you move fast and crest a hill or push through brush straight into one, especially away from the safer ground by Cabilis, where many frogloks and exiles are in their teens.

Fighting is harder than travelling. So many monsters wander, especially around the froglok town, that it is difficult to find a spot where nothing joins in. Notable creatures include Froszik the Impaler, Grik the Exile and Fakraa the Forsaken.

Roads onward

A player guide describes the swamp as sandwiched between Cabilis, the Field of Bone, Firiona Vie and Trakanon’s Teeth, and a classic zone atlas lists the same four neighbours, with East Cabilis as the city gate.

The Atlas fills in the details. Cabilis keeps a small outpost in the swamp’s northwest with a patch of relative safety around it, and just east of it a small pass leads to the Field of Bone. Along the southern edge, many small passes open into the forest near the elven fortress. To the east the swamp’s spring sits in a tunnel into the hills, where an explorer can slip past the outcasts in the cave to reach Trakanon’s Teeth.
