The Ring of Scale

The dragons of Kunark were not monsters waiting in lairs. They were a council, with laws, grudges, votes and a war they started on purpose.

The War of Kerafyrm

The early dragons were one society, divided into broods of fire, cold, poison and the water-going, who lived “relatively content together.” Then two dragons of different broods bred, and their child was the prismatic Kerafyrm, said by some to be as powerful as Veeshan herself. War followed, whether because he existed, because he drove them to it, or because some wanted him dead and others did not. Hundreds of dragons died. Kerafyrm was too powerful to kill, so he was put to sleep in a tomb under eternal guard.

Veeshan’s two laws

After that war Veeshan gave the dragons two laws: dragons of different colours must never mate, and dragons may not kill one another.

Jaled Dar’s exodus

Not all of them accepted the order of Velious. The Ring split from the Claws of Veeshan over free will and over mating between colours, and Jaled Dar led a group of dragons to the Skyfire Mountains of Kunark, where Veeshan’s Peak became their centre. Trakanon, Phara Dar, Vox and Nagafen were among them.

Prisons in the dark

Vox and Nagafen fell in love, breaking the first law, and planned to create another prismatic dragon who might overthrow the Ring itself. The second law meant they could not be killed. They escaped to Antonica and hid apart, Nagafen beneath the Lavastorm Mountains and Vox under the Everfrost Peaks. The Ring found them before they could reunite, and magically imprisoned each where they hid.

The squall

Then came the iksar. Under the Sathir dynasty they left the dragons alone, but when they grew too strong the Ring debated what to do. Trakanon wanted to act and was outvoted; the Ring chose to act only indirectly. Trakanon and the younger dragons raised a squall anyway, and it sank Emperor Rile Sathir’s warship with him aboard. That began a war between dragons and iksar that lasted almost half a century.

Emperors fall

The war ate through the iksar line. Atrebe died in his own experiments. Ganak murdered his brothers to become emperor, and it was by Ganak’s hand that Jaled Dar fell at the Field of Bone.

Agents among the iksar

The Ring also worked through spies. Korucust’s report to the Di’zok uncovers a conspiracy inside the iksar council: the member Ka’Jiq was really Vrasyk, a shapechanger planted by the Ring of Scale. Captured letters addressed to “Master Druushk” and “Mistress Dar” show the agents losing contact and preparing to evacuate. Most of the chromadracs of the Skyfire Mountains serve the Ring as scouts and emissaries.

The Harness of the Drakota

And the Ring has its enforcers. The Harness of the Drakota is an arcane endowment that controls the Drakota, and its last known wielder was Darathar.

Where the sources disagree

The RPG and the official lore tell different parts of the story; the RPG puts the founding after the War of Kerafyrm, while the 2017 preview gives the reason as free will and mating between colors.

The Ring’s debate and Trakanon’s squall follow the official account, which does not mention the RPG’s two laws.
