The Dreadlands

The Dreadlands are the harsh lands at the foot of a glacier in Kunark’s southwest, surrounding the vampire emperor’s fortress of Karnor’s Castle, with drachnid woods to the east and a frost dragon among the snow.

Land around a castle

A classic zone atlas gives the name to the harsh country around ancient Karnor’s Castle. It takes in a forest held by the drachnids and the edge of a huge glacier running down from the mountains, and in a secluded valley lies an old outpost of the Combine Empire, which a player guide marks with druid and wizard portals. A player guide describes chilly plains off the edge of the glacier on Kunark’s southwestern tip, full of wandering aggressive creatures.

Venril Sathir

A player guide says Karnor’s Castle, sitting in the middle of the Dreadlands, is home to the evil Iksar vampire Venril Sathir and his countless minions. It has only one exit and a heavy population, so trains out of it can be impressive, and anyone resting near the zone line should keep watch.

Giants, drolvarg and a dragon

Every creature here attacks, a classic zone atlas says, and the drolvarg and giants see through invisibility. The glacier’s hills make it easy to crest a rise right on top of something. The woods to the east belong to the drachnids, fast, spellcasting spider creatures, and the trees and frequent snowstorms make them easy to blunder into. A powerful frost dragon, Gorenaire, also roams the area and can kill the unprepared faster than anything they have met.

Yet a player guide calls the Dreadlands safer to hunt than much of Kunark, because over most of the zone you can see a long way. Its creatures include yetis, mountain giants, cockatrices and skeletons, and its notable figures the Mountain Giant Patriarch and Wulfare Lonewolf.

Roads onward

A classic zone atlas lists four neighbours: the Burning Wood, the Frontier Mountains, Firiona Vie through guarded caves, and Karnor’s Castle.

The Lost Valley is a separate pocket off the western edge of the main zone, a player guide says, holding the ruins of the Combine outpost and the druid and wizard portals where those classes arrive when they teleport to Kunark. Few monsters wander there, though large ones sometimes end up there after being trained or getting lost, and the outpost has strong skeletons that stay put and an important skeletal monk. The Frontier Mountains are entered through a tunnel, and the passage to Firiona Vie runs a long way through the mountains.
