Frontier Mountains

The Frontier Mountains are the highest and roughest peaks on Kunark, cutting across the western half of the continent, where giants, goblins and burynai dig for the minerals below.

The great range

player guides describe the Frontier Mountains as the highest and harshest range on the continent, cutting across its western half. They are home to large, powerful creatures for whom the peaks are mere hills, and many of them run large mining operations for the minerals under the mountains. The Atlas lists mountain giants, goblins of the Cleaving Tooth mines, burynai miners and Sarnak knights and dragoons among the residents.

Dangers

Everything in these mountains looks out for itself and attacks, a player guide says, and every creature joins a chase. Invisibility does not fully protect you, because the mountain giants see through it. The mountains themselves are the other danger: without levitation it is hard to travel quickly, many drops are fatal, and the peaks cut down how far you can see while hunting.

Notable figures named by a player guide include Overseer Miklik, Eldrak Howlingbear, Bloodscale the Vicious and Krenlek.

The goblin mines and temple

Two goblin dungeons open off the range. A community wiki describes the Mines of Nurga as part of the goblins’ large underground home, once a busy network of tunnels and now the ruins of a working mine where slaves dig by hand. Through them lies the Temple of Droga, a religious centre for goblins who have lived in these mountains for centuries; a player guide places it in the northwest corner of the range and says both are home to the Cleaving Tooth clan. Both were rebuilt in 2003 in the Legacy of Ykesha era.

Roads onward

A classic zone atlas lists six neighbours: the Burning Wood, the Dreadlands, the Lake of Ill Omen, the Overthere, the Mines of Nurga and the Temple of Droga. That makes it the crossroads between the Iksar heartland and the dragon and Sarnak lands of the west.

The Atlas gives the routes. A pass in the northern edge of the mountains leads to the Overthere, and tunnels lead to the Burning Wood and, hidden in a mountain wall, to the Dreadlands. There is one surface entrance to the goblin underground that leads to the Temple of Droga, and a similar-looking entrance to the Mines of Nurga. With tracking, a player guide adds, a player could make hunting the range’s many rare creatures a full-time hobby.
