Tenebrous Mountains

The Tenebrous Mountains are a great dark-side range where the creatures hunt by sound rather than sight, and where the vampires of the Coterie keep their small fortified camps.

Mountains in the dark

player guides describe a large mountain range on the dark side of Luclin, with scant foliage on its slopes. The creatures that live here are more likely to use sound than sight to find their prey. It is also the home of the rapidly growing Coterie of vampires.

The Atlas lists monsters from 30 to 50, and a player guide 35 to 50.

Seen through invisibility

Both sources stress one danger: every creature in the zone except the grimlings can see through invisibility and camouflage. Members of the Coterie can even turn themselves invisible, which makes their fortress very dangerous to infiltrate.

The vampires do not wander, a player guide says; they live in small groups of buildings they have made across the range. One Coterie scout does roam the whole zone and can catch the careless. The Atlas’s page on Katta Castellum adds that these vampires have long been infiltrating that city and sending assassins into its darker streets, so the camps in these mountains are the source of the Loyalists’ greatest fear.

Residents

The Atlas’s list mixes the Coterie, centurions, legionnaires, generals and scouts, with wolves and darkwing bats, grimling miners and geomancers, and several alien tribes: the Cral Ligi, the Grol Baku and the Meeda Hune. Named creatures include Kristov Otto, Yaroslav Verilak, Veynar Aeridia and Skyshadow.

The Atlas’s notes on Shar Vahl add that the acrylia for that city was mined from this range.

Between forest and castle

The range has two neighbours, a player guide says: the Grimling Forest, which a player guide places to its south, and Katta Castellum, whose second gate opens into the mountains on the castle’s western edge.

That makes the mountains the frontier between the city of Tsaph Katta and the vampires who terrorise it; see Katta Castellum for that story.
