The Plane of Knowledge

The Plane of Knowledge is the gateway to the deeper planes: the city-state of New Tanaan around the Great Library, a peaceful place where no weapon can be drawn, and the meeting point between Norrath, Luclin and the Plane of Tranquility.

New Tanaan and the Great Library

The plane is the peaceful storehouse of knowledge from every part of the known realms. Its centre is the sovereign city-state of New Tanaan. At its heart stands the Great Library, the store of mortal knowledge; nobody knows its origin, but it has stood for as long as history has been written.

New Tanaan grew up hundreds of years ago around travellers to the Library who needed somewhere to live during long visits. It became a centre of research, a resting point on long journeys and a place to set out on trips to other planes.

Three districts and a council

The city is split into three districts: Selia, the light district; Tanaan, the neutral district; and Kartis, the dark district. An elected council with one delegate from each district governs it, though civic business rarely interrupts the council’s studies.

No aggression is possible inside New Tanaan’s bounds. A magic stops anyone from drawing a weapon or casting a harmful spell, so crime is almost unknown, but the citizens still keep a local militia.

Links to other worlds

Player guides join the Plane of Knowledge to the Plane of Tranquility, and to two zones on Luclin: the Nexus and the Bazaar. Those are book and city-travel portals, not zone lines, so our map draws only the portal line to the hub.

the zone suits levels 1 to 130 and lists it as a city: it is somewhere to train, trade and travel from rather than to hunt.

A stop on the road to Time

The progression wikis give the library one more role. Once a character has combined the four elemental shields into the Quintessence of Elements, a community wiki says to hail Maelin in the library here before heading to the Plane of Innovation and its time machine.

Maelin reappears at the machine itself, the same guide says, waiting at the end of a walkway in a hidden part of the factory.
