The Servants of Bertoxxulous

Bertoxxulous rewards those who spread rot for him by raising them into his domain. An EverQuest.com article tells five of their stories, from two knights who sold themselves to save a world to a cook who poisoned a royal family.

Raex and Vindor

The additional Crypt of Decay lore in the official Planes of Power series says Raex and Vindor grew up as friends in the Kingdom of Skaxron and were sworn as knights to their lord, the good King Randall. Two years after they were knighted, the War of Ages swept their continent as a necromancer serving dark powers tried to take the world. Their king was killed, and the whole world fell under an iron-fisted dark emperor.

Bertoxxulous offered his help in return for their permanent servitude, and both agreed. He banished his own servant, the dark emperor, to another realm. They still do not know that he conquered their world only to get them. The tale never places Skaxron on Norrath.

Carprin Deatharn

Yawnwater was a small village on Antonica with a little fountain shrine dedicated to Erollisi Marr, the goddess of love. The dark knight Carprin Deatharn destroyed it, then set about desecrating the temple with a series of dark sacrifices on its altar, and gave the survivors an incurable sickness. Soon afterwards he joined his master in his domain.

Bishop Toluwon

On the Plains of Karana the clergy of Karana built a small temple, where Toluwon performed the very difficult Ritual of Thunder and Lightning for the first time in centuries.

His lover in Qeynos secretly worshipped Bertoxxulous among a group of people in brown robes. Later, in the dead of night, Toluwon crept through the temple and cut the throat of every priest in it. That is how Bishop Toluwon joined the legions of corruption, raised to serve his master in his domain.

Avhi Escron

A prophecy said that one would be born poised between light and darkness. Avhi Escron was born soon after and was the child it foretold. The prophecy calls the child he, while the tale calls her she.

She chose darkness, called down a mighty spell of foul corruption on her land, and was raised to her lord’s side in his domain.

The Wemmal family

The Wemmal family ruled a tiny, self-sufficient kingdom from a small island in the middle of the endless sea. The one survivor of a wreck, Banord Paffa, a cook from a pirate ship, slowly poisoned the food he served the royal family.

Mad with grief for their beloved rulers, the islanders lynched him; one line of the tale spells his name Banford. Bertoxxulous was pleased with his work and gave him a new form in the Plane of Disease, where he serves his lord still.
