The Plane of Valor and Aerin`Dar

The Plane of Valor is the proving ground for mortals who want to enter Mithaniel Marr’s Halls of Honor.

The proving ground

The twelfth part of the official Planes of Power lore series says the plane is built to test would-be mortal heroes who seek entry to the Halls of Honor.

The first building travelers meet is the Amphitheatre, a great arena guarded by the Soldiers of Marr. Beside it is a cemetery, built after the battle with Aerin`Dar from glass and stone taken from the Glassy Wasteland, in memory of the fallen soldiers of the Battalion of Marr.

Captain Ryglot runs the Command Center in the Forest of Marr. In that forest an Undead Knight, once a paladin of Marr, still lingers around his homestead.

From the forest to the canyon

Past the forest lie the Plains of Marr, where unicorns and pegasi are known to stretch their legs. At the top of the river bend two tall guard towers face each other across the water, joined by a suspension bridge, and the crossing leads into a wasteland of glass.

The Glassy Wasteland was once part of the Forest of Marr. In the battle with Aerin`Dar the forest was destroyed, and its tall trees were left encased in glass. Beyond it the Canyon of Marr holds drakes, glass golems and other dangers, and at its end is the entrance to the Halls of Honor.

The battle with Aerin`Dar

Many generations ago the Battalion of Marr went to war on the plane against a great enemy, Aerin`Dar, the Crystalline Dragon. The battalion was no match for it, and many great men died.

In the fighting the dragon made a mistake. It turned its glass shards on itself and sealed itself in a glass prison, which now stands between the Plane of Valor and the Halls of Honor. In time the memories faded, until all that was left were fragments of glass and the story written in the Book of Marr. One heading in the article spells the dragon’s name Arein`Dar.

Captain Ryglot’s watch

Generations later the battalion began setting up a command center in the Forest of Marr. After studying the ground, Captain Ryglot ordered a perimeter around Aerin`Dar’s prison and an observation deck to keep watch on the dragon.

Then the military council ordered the dragon destroyed. Troops gathered, but the mission was called off soon afterwards because Che Virtuson was needed at once for another mission in another realm. Ryglot was ordered to stay behind with a small platoon.
