Kaladim

The dwarven city behind the great statue in the Butcherblock Mountains: two districts carved deep into an old dragon’s lair, home of the Stormguard, the king’s castle and the halls of Brell Serilis.

North and South

Kaladim is the underground city of the dwarves of Norrath, and the game divides it into two zones. South Kaladim, which you enter first from the Butcherblock Mountains, holds the arena and Stormguard Hall, home of the warrior guild, and the throne room of King Kazon Stormhammer. North Kaladim, buried deeper in the mountains, holds the guild headquarters of the clerics, paladins and rogues. Every source treats the two halves as one city, so they share this page.

A huge carved statue of a dwarf marks the city’s entrance on the northern border of the Butcherblock Mountains. West of the entrance lies the port where the boat from Antonica arrives; far the other way, through the passes, is the Greater Faydark; and to the south runs the narrow pass to Dagnor’s Cauldron.

Inside the mountain

The whole town is carved out of the mountain and winds ever deeper, each guild in its own niche of the caverns, forming a network of warrens every dwarf calls home. The Project 1999 maps list the shops of South Kaladim: Tanned Assets, Irontoe’s Eats, the Staff and Spear, Redfist’s Metal with the Stormguard forge outside, Pub Kal, Gurtha’s Ware and the castle of the king, with the arena close by. Many of Norrath’s strongest warriors and most devout clerics hail from these halls.

Our lore page Kaladim and the Stormhammers tells how the site began as mining tunnels in a dragon’s lair until Jendl Mizebrite smashed the dragon’s skull with a warhammer and lost an arm doing it, and how King Kazon Stormhammer now rules the “Forge of Norrath.”

The ogre war

The Project 1999 history begins with Dagnor Butcherblock, the first dwarven king, whose people thrived in these mountains before the elven empire rose in the east. Under Grimmly Fireforge, the twelfth king, the ogres grew envious of the gold-rich mines, and in the middle of the second age, with the elves at war, the fifth warlord of the Rakthokian kingdom invaded across the Hills of Shade. The outlying towns of northern Kaladim were overrun, which the history gives as the reason few hamlets stand outside the capital today.

Grimmly answered with every miner, axeman and temple follower who could lift a weapon, met the ogres on Crakthorn Ridge just south of the gates, and drove them back into the Hills of Shade. Then, for the only time in known history, the dwarves made a kind of alliance with orcs, persuading the ogres’ orcish reserve to slip away into the wilds of Faydwer.

Faith of the forge

Kaladim is a city of Brell Serilis; EQ Atlas lists his temple among its religious facilities, and the statue at the gate shows either Brell or the first king. The dwarves’ long memory of those who wronged them runs through the zones around them: the Estate of Unrest to the south is the work of a Kaladim miner, Garanel Rucksif, whom the city took up arms against.
