The Estate of Unrest
A ruined dwarven estate beyond Dagnor’s Cauldron, haunted from yard to basement: famous for its trains, its five-storey manor and the ghost of Garanel Rucksif waiting deep below.
The haunted estate
The Estate of Unrest was once the home of a dwarven noble. After the unholy destruction that created Dagnor’s Cauldron and the evil creatures that took that region over, the estate was overrun by the undead, and it became one of the great havens of the unliving in Norrath. It is reached through the length of the Cauldron to a small tunnel at its southern end.
Allakhazam rates it for levels 10 to 35, and the Project 1999 guide agrees; EQ Atlas starts at 14. Allakhazam’s summary gives the story the game tells: the manor is occupied by tormented souls, rumoured to be the victims of the crazed dwarf Garanel Rucksif, whose ghost resides deep in the basement.

Whose house it was
The story has grown with the game. Our lore page The Estate of Unrest records the current telling: Garanel, a respected miner of Kaladim, murdered his wife and children, fled to this estate, was taken in by its builder, the Quellious cleric Calim Malsiv, and then turned on Calim and his kin. Quellious cursed his ghost, and a priest of Cazic-Thule later bargained to raise the dead family. Earlier guides only call it the home of a dwarven noble, and EverQuest II’s books later name its first builders; the tale was filled in over the years rather than changed.
One of its named residents is a priest of Najena, who spawns in the tower, a reminder that more than one dark power took an interest in the place.

Yard, house and basement
The estate is small and occupied from top to bottom. The yard holds the death beetles, tormented dead, greater skeletons and jack-o-lanterns that young characters hunt, often along the left, back or right walls by the gazebo. The manor has five levels including the basement: high-teens undead on the first floor, the reclusive ghoul magus room on the second, the busy barroom on the third, then the tower, and the hand room at the very top, with a balcony that offers a quick escape over the patio roof.
The basement is a deathtrap for anyone who does not know it, with festering hags spawning in groups and mortuary fungus that puts fighters to sleep. At its far end is the dwarven ghost, guarded by the toughest monsters in the zone. Lurking mummies, blade fiends, werebats and Khrix Fritchoff with his abomination fill out the cast.

Trains to the tunnel
Unrest was infamous for its trains, and Allakhazam still opens with that. Most hunting meant one player running into the house, hitting something and running back out, and the undead did not always follow nicely: they circled the house gathering friends, and overpulls spilled into the yard. The entry tunnel is very long, so the guides advised waiting for a train to come back out rather than following it in.
It was worth it. The Project 1999 guide calls it one of the great zones of the game, broken into rooms for particular level ranges, fast, dangerous, rich in staple items, with players who essentially lived there for ten levels. Clerics, necromancers, paladins and shadow knights, with their spells against undead, did best of all.

Later Unrest
Allakhazam notes a higher-level revamp, Greater Unrest, that returns during special Hardcore Heritage events, and a Curse Begins version reached from the Cauldron. The haunted manor above is the classic one.
