Befallen

A ruined temple hidden off the southern West Commons, overrun by the undead its monks once hunted, and by the necromancers and shadow knights who came after them.

A temple fallen

Befallen was once a fine temple, the secluded home of the monks who kept it. Many blame the dark elves for what it became; whatever the cause, it is now home to the undead that its people used to hunt and destroy, and to those who thrive on such beings: necromancers and shadow knights. The temple’s story is in Befallen and Marr’s Fist.

Monsters run from about level 7 to 25 and above, with an experience bonus: giant and plague rats, skeletons of many kinds, lesser mummies, ghouls, will-o’-wisps, and necromancer apprentices, neophytes and acolytes. Named figures include Commander Windstream, Gynok Moltar, Priest Amiaz, an elf skeleton and Skeleton Lrodd.

Trains and swarms

Befallen is small and packed, and most visitors die at least once. The first floor is low level and the third is high, so trains run straight through the newbies. When the person a train is chasing dies or zones, the whole train walks back, attacking anyone in range, which in a dungeon this small is almost everyone. Fleeing means opening locked doors from your inventory while being hit.

From the top of the entry stairs you can see four skeletons, each in range of the others; if they are worth experience to you, one pull brings all four. Every room is built the same way, so either solo greens and low blues or bring a group.

Specific hazards

Mummies cause disease, so bring someone who can cure it. Sitting, meditating or looting widens the range at which creatures notice you, and aggressive greens will attack a sitter. The necromancers are far deadlier than they con: they cast while running and tend to flee early, so kill them fast.

Most visitors come for a specific item or quest, or are necromancers, clerics and paladins with spells made for the undead.

The door

The front entrance lies in a narrow, dimly lit tunnel off the southern edge of the West Commonlands, tucked away behind the ground the hill giants roam, and it is the dungeon’s only exit.

Allakhazam remembers its keepers as priests and notes the keys needed to reach the lower levels; the zone was revamped on June 27, 2001.
