The Werewolves of Darkhollow

Werewolves began in Darkhollow. Its wurines split into the Shadowmane and Ragepaw clans, and only one of them bowed to the master of the spire.

The Great Wuria

The official strategy guide says the first feral werewolves, the wurines, credit their creation to the Great Wuria, the mother of all werewolves, seen less as a god than as a spirit of the dark wilds.

Each pack lived apart until Matriarch Shyra claimed to have spoken with the Great Wuria through divination. Many joined her and became the Shadowmane clan, and the feral wurines banded together as the Ragepaw clan. Soon after, Shyra created the Lodge of the Fangs, a simple court for all wurines.

Two clans

A civil war, the War of the West Tunnels, lasted 20 years, and the guide dates that chapter to 4300. Afterwards Ragepaw elders were given seats in the Lodge of the Fangs.

The Shadowmanes believe females have the closest spiritual bond with the Great Wuria, and they loathe the purely savage ways of the Ragepaws. The Ragepaws have been led for hundreds of years by the brute strength and will of Bloodeye.

The master’s offer

About 200 years ago a dark master who threatened every wurine gave Matriarch Shyra a grim choice: side with him in his great castle above the lake, or die. The Lodge agreed. The Ragepaws refused to live as his servants. The Shadowmanes still serve him, building and guarding his fortress above Lake Korlach; the master is Mayong Mistmoore.

The first bite

No werewolf was seen and no human bitten until an expedition of Qeynos miners broke through the barrier of Darkhollow.

A community story text, which the guide does not contain, carries the tale further. It names three survivors, Patrim Gallowtrow, Brendin Fardon and Wendal Meen, who became the Clan of the White Fangs, and says Patrim bit Sentry Alchin, friend of Sentry Joanna in the Rathe Mountains. It calls a third breed, of mixed blood, the “Dusk Leapers”, and names a band called the Fangbreakers, led for 500 years by Nul Aleswiller.

Where they live

The Shadowmane territory is the western half of Stoneroot Falls, which also holds a Shrine to Wuria. Hidden in the Caverns of the Lost off Stoneroot Falls are the quarters of Warlock Therigal. The few shiliskin refugees from Illsalin have retreated to Malgrinnor, the fortified outpost on the Undershore, where Jarzarrad the Prophet lives.

The guide contradicts itself on the Snarlstone Dens, saying in one place that their only way in or out is from Corathus Creep and in another that an entrance lies off the Undershore. It also places the Ragepaws in the West Korlach region, which the community text calls West Lake Korlach.
